Primary Job Title: Cataract Surgeon (Ophthalmologist)

About The Opportunity Join a mission-driven, charitable eye hospital delivering high-volume cataract services and comprehensive ophthalmic care to underserved communities in North Kerala. We seek an experienced cataract surgeon to lead surgical services, mentor nursing & OT teams, and support outreach screening and quality-improvement initiatives—fully on-site in Thalassery, Kannur.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Perform and lead high-volume cataract surgeries (phacoemulsification and MSICS) with consistently low complication rates and excellent visual outcomes.
  • Manage pre-operative assessment and surgical planning including biometry, IOL power calculation, and risk stratification.
  • Oversee intraoperative decision-making, supervise OT protocols, maintain sterile technique, and ensure efficient theatre workflow with nursing staff.
  • Provide post-operative care, complication management, and timely follow-up; perform YAG laser capsulotomy when required.
  • Participate in community outreach and screening camps, patient education, and cataract awareness drives in surrounding districts.
  • Contribute to clinical governance: surgical audits, outcome tracking, training of junior doctors and nursing staff, and implementation of quality & safety protocols.

Skills & Qualifications

Must-Have

  • MBBS with DO/MS/MD in Ophthalmology or equivalent qualification recognised in India.
  • Proven hands-on expertise in phacoemulsification and MSICS with documented surgical outcomes.
  • Strong competence in pre-op biometry (A-scan/optical biometry), slit-lamp examination, and post-op care.
  • Comfortable supervising and training nursing/OT teams in a high-volume charitable hospital setting and participating in outreach camps.

Preferred

  • Experience managing complex cataract cases, toric/IOL multifocal implantation, and YAG capsulotomy.
  • Prior work in NGO/charitable eye hospitals or community ophthalmology programs and familiarity with outcome audits and EMR systems.
