Role Overview
The D365 F&O Data Migration Lead is responsible for defining, governing, and executing the end‑to‑end data migration strategy for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations implementations.
The role involves coordinating with functional, technical, and business teams to ensure accurate extraction, cleansing, transformation, validation, and loading of master data, reference data, open transactions, and historical data into D365 F&O.
Key Responsibilities
1. Data Migration Strategy, Planning & Governance
- Define the overall migration strategy, scope, and sequencing across entities (Master data, reference data, opening balances, open transactions, historical datasets).
- Conduct and lead Data Migration Workshops, including entity mapping, quality standards, source system analysis, and stakeholder responsibilities.
- Establish migration RACI, governance processes, and detailed activity plans across all phases.
2. Source‑to‑Target Mapping, Transformation & Cleansing
- Lead detailed field‑level data mapping from legacy systems to D365 F&O templates.
- Design transformation logic, lookup mappings, validations, mandatory field alignment, enumeration harmonization (UoM, tax codes, categories, dimensions).
- Oversee data cleansing and profiling, ensuring data quality before migration.
3. Build & Execute Migration Pipelines
- Oversee full ETL lifecycle: extract → cleanse → transform → validate → load → reconcile.
- Utilize D365 tools including:
- Data Management Framework (DMF)
- Data Entities
- Excel Add‑ins
- Staging tables
- Azure Data Factory & stored procedures (per extended migration templates
- Work with technical teams on dual‑write alignment where needed
4. Validation, SIT/UAT Support & Issue Resolution
- Validate migrated data across cycles: mock loads, SIT, UAT, cut‑over rehearsal.
- Lead defect identification, root cause analysis, and re‑migration planning.
- Maintain detailed logs, transformation rules, and audit history for all iterations.
5. Cross‑Team Collaboration & Stakeholder Management
- Work closely with functional SMEs (Finance, SCM, MFG) to verify mapping, dependencies, and data correctness.
- Coordinate with Solution Architect, Technical Lead, DevOps, and Integration SMEs regarding environment readiness, dependencies, and data flow governance.
- Engage business users for data validation, reconciliation, and sign‑off.
6. Cutover Planning & Go‑Live Readiness
- Define cutover load sequence for master data, open transactions, balances, and historical datasets.
- Create rollback strategies, contingency plans, and readiness checklists.
7. Documentation & Continuous Improvement
- Prepare data migration templates, mapping sheets, design documents, SOPs, and instructions for business stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with data governance, audit, and security policies.
Required Skills & Experience
Technical Expertise
- Proven experience in D365 F&O Data Entities, DMF, staging frameworks, and import/export processes.
- Strong SQL skills, including writing queries, validation logic, stored procedures, and bulk transformations.
- Experience with Azure Data Factory, SSIS, or similar ETL tools.
- Understanding of D365 data models (Customers, Vendors, Items, GL, BOM, inventory, transactional data).
Functional Knowledge
- Strong understanding of F&O modules: Finance, SCM, Manufacturing, WHS, Inventory.
- Ability to interpret functional requirements and align them with migration design.
Leadership & Coordination
- Experience leading cross‑functional data migration teams (analysts, developers, SMEs).
- Strong stakeholder management, communication, and workshop facilitation skills.
Experience Requirements
- 6–12+ years total experience, with 4+ years in D365 F&O data migration leadership roles.
