Reports To: Head of Manufacturing (HOM) & Director

Job Overview

The Head – Merchandising & Planning will lead end-to-end merchandising strategy and production planning for a textile brand within the garment manufacturing division. This role is responsible for aligning order execution, capacity planning, and inventory optimization with business objectives, ensuring on-time delivery, cost efficiency, and quality compliance.

Key Responsibilities

1. Merchandising Strategy & Order Management

  • Develop and execute merchandising strategies aligned with seasonal demand, sales requirements, and brand positioning.
  • Drive order feasibility by collaborating with design, sampling, and costing teams.
  • Ensure accurate order booking, T&A (Time & Action) planning, and execution tracking.
  • Align product development with manufacturing capabilities and capacity constraints.

2. Production Planning & Control (PPC) with IE Integration

  • Develop detailed production plans based on order priorities, capacity availability, and delivery timelines.
  • Integrate IE concepts such as Standard Minute Value (SMV), and capacity analysis into production planning.
  • Optimize production schedules using:
  • Capacity loading vs. available manpower/machines
  • Bottleneck identification and resolution
  • Line efficiency tracking
  • Coordinate with factory teams to ensure adherence to production plans and shipment timelines.
  • Implement finite capacity planning to avoid overloading and ensure realistic scheduling.

3. Industrial Engineering (IE) Driven Planning

  • Work closely with IE teams to establish accurate SMVs for all styles.
  • Use efficiency metrics (e.g., line efficiency %, DHU – Defects per Hundred Units, capacity utilization) to refine planning decisions.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives such as:
  • Lean manufacturing
  • Waste reduction (Muda elimination)
  • Productivity improvement projects

4. Inventory & Material Planning

  • Oversee raw material and WIP inventory to ensure uninterrupted production flow.
  • Collaborate with sourcing and stores to align material availability with production schedules.
  • Optimize inventory levels to reduce excess stock while avoiding shortages.
  • Implement material requirement planning aligned with production plans.

5. Forecasting, Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Analyze historical data, order trends, and sales demand to forecast production requirements.
  • Track KPIs such as:
  • On-Time Delivery (OTD)
  • Production Efficiency
  • Capacity Utilization
  • Inventory Turnover
  • Prepare MIS reports and dashboards for senior leadership.
  • Use data-driven insights to improve planning accuracy and operational performance.

6. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with merchandising, IE, production, quality, sourcing, sales, and logistics teams.
  • Ensure alignment across departments for smooth order execution.
  • Participate in S&OP (Sales & Operations Planning) discussions.

7. Vendor & Capacity Management

  • Manage external vendors for capacity augmentation.
  • Evaluate vendor performance based on delivery, quality, and efficiency metrics.
  • Optimize cost and capacity through strategic vendor allocation.

8. Budgeting & Cost Optimization

  • Plan and manage departmental budgets.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities through:
  • Improved efficiency
  • Reduced wastage
  • Better capacity utilization
  • Ensure cost-effective production without compromising quality standards.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Textile, Fashion, Industrial Engineering, Business, or related field.
  • 7-10 years of experience in merchandising & production planning in the textile/garment industry.
  • Strong knowledge of Industrial Engineering concepts.
  • Experience with ERP systems, planning tools, and advanced Excel.
