The Role
As Backend Engineer (FastAPI and Real-Time), you will build Zillwork’s own real-time communication backend — a WhatsApp-style messaging system built in-house, with full control over data, logic, and performance. You will also build the subscription management layer and the API gateway that connects our apps to the AI engine.
What You Will Build
– FastAPI WebSocket backend: 50,000+ concurrent connections using uvicorn workers
– Redis Pub/Sub message routing: message from sender to recipient in under 50ms
– Chat message storage: PostgreSQL with full metadata (JobID, participants, type, media)
– Accept or Decline engine: atomic database update with push notification on decision
– Subscription management API: create, cancel, pause, resume with webhook handling
– Kong API gateway configuration for all platform services
– Firebase FCM push notification integration: new activity, messages, status changes
– User registration API: save to database, return canonical record identifier
– Activity search API: geo-query + status filter + distance sort
What We Are Looking For
– 5+ years FastAPI or async Python in production
– WebSocket at scale: concurrent connection management, graceful degradation
– Redis Pub/Sub for real-time message routing
– PostgreSQL: queries, transactions, connection pooling (PgBouncer)
– Clean REST API design — versioned and documented
– Docker and basic Kubernetes
Bonus: Kong API gateway, PgBouncer, Firebase FCM, background task management (Celery or ARQ)
