Job Description:
The Anesthesiologist is responsible for providing safe, effective, and high-quality anesthesia care to patients undergoing surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures. The role includes perioperative patient assessment, administration of anesthesia, pain management, and critical care support, in compliance with clinical standards, ethical practices, and statutory regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Conduct pre-anesthetic evaluation, including medical history, physical examination, and risk assessment.
- Plan and administer appropriate anesthesia (general, regional, spinal, epidural, local, or sedation) based on patient condition and surgical requirements.
- Monitor patients vital signs and physiological status before, during, and after anesthesia.
- Manage airway, ventilation, fluid therapy, and hemodynamic stability intraoperatively.
- Provide post-anesthesia care and pain management in PACU/ICU.
- Respond promptly to anesthetic emergencies and complications.
- Participate in resuscitation and Code Blue management as required.
- Provide anesthesia support for OT, ICU, emergency, labor room, endoscopy, radiology, and other procedural areas.
Pain Management & Critical Care
- Manage acute and chronic pain using pharmacological and interventional techniques.
- Participate in critical care management of ICU patients when required.
- Ensure safe use of anesthetic drugs, equipment, and monitoring devices.
Patient Safety & Quality
- Adhere to hospital policies, SOPs, NABH standards, and infection prevention protocols.
- Ensure compliance with surgical safety checklist and anesthesia documentation.
- Participate in clinical audits, mortality and morbidity meetings, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Report and manage adverse events, near misses, and medication errors.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and complete anesthesia records and patient documentation.
- Ensure informed consent for anesthesia is obtained and documented.
- Comply with statutory requirements, ethical guidelines, and professional standards.
- Support accreditation and regulatory inspections (e.g., NABH).
Teamwork & Training
- Coordinate effectively with surgeons, nursing staff, technicians, and other healthcare professionals.
- Supervise anesthesia technicians and OT staff as applicable.
- Participate in training, CME programs, mock drills, and academic activities.
Working Conditions
- OT, ICU, emergency, and procedural areas.
- Rotational duties, on-call and emergency services as required.
Performance Indicators
- Patient safety outcomes and complication rates.
- Compliance with clinical protocols and documentation standards.
- Participation in quality improvement and audit activities.
- Feedback from patients, peers, and management.
