Position Summary

The Nursing Superintendent is responsible for overall administration, supervision, and coordination of nursing services in the hospital. The role ensures delivery of high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, optimal staffing, clinical governance, and continuous improvement in nursing standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Nursing Administration & Operations

  • Oversee day-to-day functioning of all nursing units (ICU, OT, Wards, ER, MCH, Oncology, etc.)
  • Ensure adequate nurse staffing as per census and acuity.
  • Prepare and monitor duty rosters and deployment.
  • Maintain nurse–patient ratios as per NABH / statutory norms.
  • Ensure adherence to hospital policies, SOPs, and clinical protocols.

2. Clinical Quality & Patient Care

  • Ensure high standards of patient care and nursing practices.
  • Monitor medication administration safety, infection control, and documentation quality.
  • Conduct regular nursing audits and quality checks.
  • Address patient complaints related to nursing services.
  • Participate in quality initiatives, accreditation processes (NABH/JCI), and audits.

3. Human Resource Management

  • Recruitment planning in coordination with HR.
  • Conduct performance appraisals of nursing staff.
  • Identify training needs and organize CME / skill-based training programs.
  • Mentor Nursing Supervisors and Ward In-charges.
  • Ensure discipline and professional conduct within nursing teams.

4. Training & Development

  • Ensure induction training for new nurses.
  • Implement continuous nursing education programs.
  • Conduct skill assessments and competency mapping.
  • Encourage certification and specialization programs.

5. Compliance & Accreditation

  • Ensure compliance with NABH, biomedical waste management, infection control, and statutory guidelines.
  • Maintain nursing-related documentation and records.
  • Prepare for internal and external audits.
  • Participate in hospital committees (Infection Control, Quality, Ethics, etc.).

6. Inventory & Resource Management

  • Monitor consumption of nursing supplies.
  • Coordinate with stores and purchase for availability of critical items.
  • Prevent wastage and ensure cost-effective utilization of resources.

7. Coordination & Communication

  • Coordinate with doctors, allied health professionals, and administration.
  • Attend management meetings.
  • Ensure effective communication within nursing teams.
  • Promote teamwork and collaborative care.
