Senior Quality Engineering Manager – SDET Web
Position Summary:
The Senior Quality Engineering Manager, SDET Web is responsible for leading and scaling quality engineering practices across Marriott’s global digital web platforms. This role combines people leadership, technical strategy, and delivery accountability to ensure high quality, reliable, and performant web and API experiences.
The manager partners closely with product, design, engineering, and platform leaders to define quality strategy, guide automation investments, and embed a shift left quality mindset across teams. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring strong technical depth, coaching ability, and ownership of quality outcomes across multiple web domains.
Key Responsibilities:
People & Team Leadership:
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of Quality Engineers and SDETs, providing technical guidance, career development, and regular feedback.
- Drive hiring, onboarding, performance management, and succession planning for the QE team.
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence within the quality organization.
Quality Strategy & Execution:
- Define and own quality engineering strategy for web and API platforms, aligning automation, tooling, and coverage with business priorities.
- Ensure consistent quality practices across teams through standards, reusable frameworks, and governance.
- Balance automation investment, risk mitigation, and release readiness to support fast, reliable delivery.
Technical & Delivery Leadership:
- Guide architectural decisions for test automation frameworks, CI/CD integration, and test infrastructure.
- Review and influence automation design, test strategy, and implementation through code reviews and technical mentorship.
- Partner with engineering leaders to improve testability, observability, and defect prevention.
- Provide hands on technical leadership by guiding the design, development, and evolution of scalable web UI and API automation frameworks, while reviewing and mentoring team contributions.
- Integrate UI and API test suites into CI/CD pipelines to support continuous testing and high-quality releases.
- Champion Quality Engineering Center of Excellence (COE) standards, reusable frameworks, and shared testing accelerators.
Cross Functional Collaboration:
- Serve as the primary quality engineering leader for assigned web domains, working closely with product owners and engineering managers.
- Communicate quality status, risks, and metrics clearly to stakeholders and leadership.
- Drive alignment between QE, development, and platform teams to improve end to end delivery quality.
Metrics, Reporting & Continuous Improvement:
- Establish and own quality engineering goals and success metrics aligned with business outcomes and release commitments.
- Define and track quality metrics (automation coverage, defect trends, release readiness, pipeline health).
- Use data to identify systemic issues and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Champion shift left and shift right engineering practices, including accessibility, visual validation, and non functional testing.
Required Qualifications:
- 8+ years of experience in software quality engineering, with 3+ years in a technical leadership or people management role.
- Proven experience leading and scaling QE or SDET teams in large scale web and API environments.
- Strong understanding of modern quality engineering practices, automation strategy, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Demonstrated ability to balance hands on technical leadership with people management responsibilities.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication, decision making, and delivery skills.
Track record of progressive hands-on experience with modern test automation frameworks and tools, including:
- Selenium WebDriver with Java and TestNG or JUnit
- Playwright with JavaScript or TypeScript
- BrowserStack or similar cloud based cross browser testing platforms
- REST API testing tools such as Postman, REST Assured, ReadyAPI or equivalent
- GraphQL API testing, including queries, mutations, and schema validation
- Strong programming skills in Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Python
- Solid understanding of HTML5, CSS3, DOM, browser behavior, and developer tools.
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Harness, or equivalent.
- Proven ability to design and execute complex testing strategies beyond basic functional testing.
- Strong debugging, problem solving, and analytical skills.
- Experience working in fast paced Agile/Scrum environments.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience leading quality engineering across multiple teams or product areas.
- Familiarity with organizational level quality metrics, governance, and continuous improvement programs.
- Experience influencing senior engineering and product leadership on quality strategy.
- Prior experience operating within a Quality Engineering COE or platform-based QE model.
- Experience testing microservices and distributed systems.
- Experience piloting AI assisted development or testing tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor) to improve automation development productivity.
- Experience leading testing for AI enabled web or API based applications is a plus.
- Knowledge of Marriott digital platforms or prior experience in hospitality, travel, or ecommerce domains is a plus.
