Energy sector – apply modelling skills using R, Python, Databricks. Combine your energy sector knowledge and advanced modelling to forecast medium to long term consumer electricity demand. About the division
AEMO’s forecasting division is responsible for providing long and medium-term forecasts of Australia’s energy supply and demand. The team is responsible for delivering critical data that underpins many of our major reports, including AEMO’s Medium Term Projected Assessment of System Adequacy, Gas Statement of Opportunities, Electricity Statement of Opportunities, Integrated System Plan, and South Australian Electricity Report.
The team provides: Regional electricity consumption forecasts for the National Electricity Market, and the Wholesale Energy Market. The pipeline of future generation and battery projects currently progressing. Reliability forecasts. Analysis of gas and electricity system developments, costs, and benefits under a range of scenarios for the next twenty years. Bespoke analysis to support decision making both internal and external to AEMO.
The position has the flexibility to be based out of any of our offices in – Sydney (two locations CBD and Norwest), Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart.
What you will be doing
You will assist in developing, advising and clearly communicating medium to long term electricity demand forecasts using a mix of machine learning, statistical, econometric and engineering approaches. These forecasts are produced at both regional and fine spatial levels and are used internally and externally to support reliability and system security assessments, major investment decisions, and policy and regulatory activities.
The Analyst will design, test and refine electricity demand forecasting models using advanced methods and energy sector expertise and document insights and conclusions clearly for diverse internal and external audiences. You will analyse market and industry developments impacting Australia’s evolving energy systems and maintain high-quality documentation to capture process improvements and methodological enhancements. In this position you will mentor and support graduates and students in delivering high-quality analytical work.
This is an exciting opportunity to step into a secondment backfill position within a collaborative, people first team.
Education/Certificates
Bachelor or advanced degree in a quantitative and/or business discipline.
Experience & Knowledge
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex analysis clearly
- Sound knowledge of the energy sector and AEMO’s political, legal and regulatory context, or the ability to rapidly acquire it
- Experience in demand forecasting and applied analytical work across operational, business and regulatory questions
- Capability to design and develop conceptual models and interrogate large datasets using databases
- Proficiency coding models in tools such as R, Python, Databricks or similar.
