The International Forum for Environment, Sustainability & Technology (iFOREST) is seeking a highly technically competent and outgoing professional to undertake technical and scientific research and build stakeholder engagement on scientific mine closure, mine repurposing, and the redevelopment of post-mining landscapes.

This role is suited for a mid-level professional with a strong grounding in mining, geology, or allied earth sciences, capable of delivering rigorous technical assessments and implementation-oriented outputs, while also engaging closely with government and industry stakeholders.

Location: Nagpur, Maharashtra (with required field engagement)

In recent years, the organisation has been closely engaged in scientific mine closure, mine-land repurposing, and green investments in such land and areas, working in tandem with governments and industry.

Role Overview

The selected candidate will undertake and support technical assessments and planning for mine closure and land repurposing, while also playing a key role in on-ground coordination with public sector companies (PSUs), district administrations, and state government agencies.

The role requires a combination of- Technical depth, Field-based assessment capability, and Institutional engagement and coordination skills.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

Qualification: A strong technical and scientific background is a must for this position.

The candidate must have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Geology / Applied Geology, Earth Sciences, Mining Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or similar, closely related disciplines.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline will be an advantage

Experience: The candidate is required to have:

  • Minimum 5-7 years of relevant work experience in mine closure planning, land reclamation, geological assessments, and such related matters
  • Familiarity with- Mine closure regulations and statutory processes, Land, water, and geotechnical assessment methods
  • Experience in coal and/or mining regions

Key Responsibilities

1. Research-Technical & Scientific Assessments

  • Undertake technical and engineering assessments across mine closure planning and post-mining land repurposing.
  • Conduct site surveys and site-specific technical and scientific assessments, including for land suitability, slope stability, soil quality, hydrology, etc.
  • Prepare technical reports and assessment frameworks
  • Develop asset-specific and cluster-level repurposing plans along with team members based on technical and scientific assessments, site surveys, etc., in line with statutory guidelines and best practices.
  • Support preparation of project concepts and technical notes for repurposed mine land.

2. Stakeholder Engagement

  • Maintain regular and structured engagement with:
  • Coal PSUs and mining companies
  • District administrations
  • State government departments (industry, mining, environment, energy, etc.)
  • Civil society members and experts
  • Support on-ground coordination for site visits, data collection, and validation
  • Facilitate meetings, consultations, and technical discussions with stakeholders
  • Support iFOREST programme development and presence in the concerned states.
